Emergency situations
Step-by-step procedures and emergency contacts for urgent situations.

Do NOT use anything electrical
- Don’t turn lights on or off
- Don’t use phones, doorbells, or appliances inside
- Don’t light matches or smoke

Ventilate if it’s safe
- Open doors and windows to let gas escape
- Do this quickly and calmly

Turn off the gas supply (if you know how and can do it safely)
- Usually at the gas meter (turn the valve a quarter turn so it’s perpendicular to the pipe)

Leave the building immediately
- Get everyone (and pets) outside
- Move a safe distance away

Call the gas emergency number from outside
- UK: National Gas Emergency Service – 0800 111 999

Do NOT
- Do not try to find the leak yourself
- Do not re-enter the property until professionals say it’s safe
- Do not assume the smell will “go away”

Check if it’s just your property
- Look outside: are neighbour’s lights on?
- Check other rooms or sockets in your home.
- If only part of the property is affected, it may be a tripped circuit.

Check your fuse box / consumer unit
- Look for a switch that’s flipped to OFF or TRIPPED.
- Reset it by switching it fully OFF, then back ON.
- If it trips again, leave it off — there may be a fault or unsafe appliance.

Unplug appliances
- Unplug large appliances (kettle, toaster, heater, washing machine).
- Reset the power again.
- Plug appliances back in one at a time to identify the problem.

If the power is out in your area
- It’s likely a local or regional outage.
- Contact your electricity network provider to report it or check updates.

Emergency number:
- National Grid, Call 105 (free, 24/7)
What to do immediately

Turn off the water supply
- Turn off the stopcock / main water valve (usually under the sink, near the meter, or outside).
- If the leak is from an appliance, turn off the isolation valve to that appliance if possible.

Contain the water
- Use buckets, towels, or containers to catch dripping water.
- Move furniture, electrical items, and valuables out of the affected area.

Turn off electrics if needed
- If water is near sockets, lights, or electrical appliances, turn off the electricity at the fuse box.
- Do not touch electrics if you’re standing in water.

Relieve pressure
- It’s likely a local or regional outage.
- Contact your electricity network provider to report it or check updates.

Preventing future leaks
- Know where your main stopcock is
- Don’t ignore dripping taps
- Don’t ignore even the smallest of leaks as these can worsen quickly

Kitchen drain care
- Never pour fats, oils, or grease down the sink. Let them cool and dispose of them in the bin.
- Scrape plates before washing up.
- Use a sink strainer to catch food scraps.
- Run hot water for a few seconds after washing up to help flush residue.
- Avoid putting coffee grounds, rice, pasta, or eggshells down the drain.

Bathroom drain care
- Use hair catchers in showers and baths.
- Avoid flushing wet wipes, cotton buds, sanitary products, or dental floss — even if labelled “flushable”.
- Use toilet paper only, in reasonable amounts.
- Clean plugholes regularly to remove hair and soap buildup.

Around the property
- Don’t use drains to dispose of chemicals, paint, or building debris.
- Be careful with outdoor drains — keep them clear of leaves, mud, and litter.
- Check drain covers occasionally, especially after storms.

Simple maintenance tips
- Flush kitchen and bathroom drains monthly with hot water and dish soap.
- Use baking soda and vinegar occasionally to reduce odors and buildup.
- Have drains professionally inspected if you experience slow drainage or frequent blockages.

When to get professional help
- Repeated blockages
- Gurgling sounds or bad smells
- Slow drainage in multiple fixtures
